The Silly Pets Book Fair was a great success! All students came to visit the fair with their ELA classes in order to preview the fair. Students enjoyed browsing the books and other book related items for sale. Students were able to play the Did You Know? cats and dogs fact game as well as use the Dress Up Like a Cat or Dog selfie station. Students who received a Got Caught Reading ticket during the month of March used it to enter the raffle to win one of the book fair poster. For every book purchased at the fair, students received a guessing slip for a chance to guess and win the Scooby Snacks and the Goldfish. (See below pictures of our lucky game winners.) We also had our lucky $20 shopping spree winner and our $5 shopping spree winner who won the Teachers' Pet Matching Game come choose the items they wanted on the last day of the fair. The funds raised will go toward buying new lounge seating for the Learning Commons. Thank you Smitha students, families, faculty, and staff for supporting our Book Fair!

Smitha students enjoyed the short walk over to Hollydale Elementary to celebrate Read Across America week by reading Dr. Seuss books to the young students. Each day a different grade level went to read to our future Smitha students.
I hope students, faculty, staff, and visitors will enjoy the new look of our 25 year old circulation desk. The brown front was painted black. Letters for inspiring words were made with cardstock using a Cricut. The letters were then glued down using a combination of spray adhesive and Mod Podge. Then entire surface was then sprayed with Mod Podge clear acrylic sealer.
Middle school students and staff in Cobb County, Georgia will have the opportunity to participate in an Olympic Reading Challenge. No, they are not reading books about the Olympics, although they could, they will be reading books appropriate to their reading level and submitting online for the following categories:
Click on the link below and choose Challenge Form to submit your entry and win a gold medal! http://www.cobblearning.net/readingchallenge/ All of our wonderful sixth graders received a book as our gift to them this holiday season. Students were very excited to choose one of four hundred books that were wrapped and labeled for boy, girl, either and by lexile. Happy holidays, everyone!
How many books are in the Christmas tree? Come in to the Learning Commons and take a look at our tree, fill out the slip to guess, and place it in the wrapped box for a chance to win a prize. (Guessing more than one time will disqualify you from the contest.) December 19th is last day to make guesses.
During December, the Smitha Learning Commons has many opportunities for students to come in and learn or advance their coding skills. There are activities to do on code.org, scratch.org, and students can also learn how to code Sphero, our programmable robots. We hope students join us for some coding fun!
I attended the GaETC conference at the beginning of November along with several other Smitha teachers. I learned about BrainPop' s new Make a Movie feature, StoryBoard That, and much much more that I am excited to share with the rest of the Smitha teachers.
Students will have the opportunity to come to the Learning Commons October 30th through November 3rd to play various board games in celebration of International Games Week. The Learning Commons will also be highlighting all the books we have on gaming and crafts. May the best player win!
